who was killed in a shutout this morning, tamerlan is a tsarnaev was 26. in 2007 he became a legal resident in america, he was a student at bunker hill community college and competitive boxer. this violent and drautic series of events was not set off by police, but by the suspects themselves, who were apparently trying to escape law enforcement. here's how it played out. around 10:00 p.m. last night, the suspects robbed a store. they then proceeded to fatally shoot an m.i.t. security officer and hijack a mercedes suv. the owner of that vehicle was held hostage for half an hour while the two brothers pulled $800 out of an atm. they released the owner of the mercedes unharmed. police chased the suspects into watertown, where this shootout took place. the suspects exchanged fire with police and threw explosives towards them. at one point, tamerlan sarn ev got out of the car wearing an ied strapped to his chest and was shot by police. his body was run over by dzhokah tsarnaev as he fled the scene. at present the manhunt continues. the police are looking for a younger brother and a poss

.s. to investigate the deceased brother tamerlan tsarnaev and in the 2011 year, the fbi did that, they interviewed him. peter doocy is following this part of the story for us and joins us live from washington with more. peter? >> reporter: heather, they're. the fbi got a request from a foreign government at the beginning of 2011 to track down tamerlan tsarnaev because this foreign government suspected he might have extremist ties. so the fbi took advantage of massive u.s. databases to look for evidence in phone logs, internet records. they searched for known associates, even interviewed tamerlan and some family members of his, although we aren't sure which ones. after all that, they found no evidence of terrorist activity, either here or abroad. so they let him go and closed the case and now experts are explaining how he might have been able to fly below the radar and avoid suspicion for so long. >> but now what you're seeing is people with american citizenship or american student visas and they're able to move freely in the united states. they may or may not have training. but they're so -- it's

the fbi had heard of tamerlan tsarnaev. the fbi now admits that a foreign government, meaning russia or more specifically the russian fsb, the successor to the kgb, that that russian intelligence agency asked the fbi to check him out in 2011 warning that he was, quote, a follower of radical islam. and, quote, a strong believer and may have been planning to leave the u.s. to join an underground group in europe. the fbi even interviewed him in 2011, but say they found no related evidence. the fbi did not follow up after tamerlan tsarnaev returned from chechnya in 2012. it seems pretty evident that he was not watched closely enough. i want to bring in julia kayyem. and julia, the fbi, they might be the here rows of this operation right now, but they are going to have a lot of questions to answer about this. >> i think they will be fully prepared to do so. as you said, they are the heros in terms of how they captured them. but looking back is important for two reasons and the institution itself, the white house will look back and say what did we miss, how did we miss it, did we not take
